LESSONS FROM THE SEA

Suspended in mid-‘air’ over 4-5 meters of water, I do a kind of baby crawl over velvety cappuccino colored sand.  Who says snorkeling in sand is boring!  It ripples and rises like cream cheese frosting on my hummingbird cake.  Who did that!  I work really hard to get those pretty designs in my frosting – Who took the time to decorate the bottom of the sea this morning, just for me?!

Hanging there, I watch a tiny mound on the sea bottom.  It has a blow-hole in the center, I wonder who lives in there.  Well!  Whoever he is, he is certainly very rude because I’ve been hanging here for a long time and he never once stuck his head out to say hello!

As I begin to crawl away, I notice dozens and dozens of little sparklies just below me – teensy tiny baby fish.  They are incredibly small and transparent – but the sunlight reflects off their eyes and makes them look like little salt-water lightning bugs.

As I watch them, I’m wondering about my position in this place.  Am I so transparent that the reflected light of the Son can shine thru me?  Can my Father trust me so that when He shines His light on me, He is sure that someone will see Him in my eyes?

Suddenly, I see big, big fish in front of me – 12 to 18” long – about ten of them.  How graceful and beautiful they look – just hanging out being fish!  We humans get all messed up when we try to do and be something our Creator never intended.  Hey, these guys are free just to be!

Before I realize what has happened, I’ve reached the rocky edge of the island.  This is where the “good” snorkeling is, so people say.  But you know what, I’ve got my heart full already with the wonder and majesty of what I’ve just seen.  Think I’ll save the “fancy stuff” for another time.

Just another morning in the life of the embedded snorkeler from Crete – how about taking some time to experience your environment today.  You might just find God in there!
